Spillage (wet or dry)
|
Clean up spills immediately, ensuring that suitable cleaning
materials and chemicals are used in accordance with manufacturers’
instructions. Suitable ‘wet floor’ signage must be displayed and areas may
need to be cordoned off.

Trailing wires and cables
|
Ensure fixed equipment is sited to prevent cables crossing pedestrian
routes. Restrict employee/pedestrian access. Avoid, for example, cleaning
during times of pedestrian access. Provide appropriate warning signs. Use
cable covers and/or securely fix to surfaces.
|
Accumulation/rubbish
|
Prevent the build up of accumulations by frequency of emptying
containers. Provide adequate sized suitably covered containers.
|
Carpets/mats
|
Fix securely, replace when worn or holed and prevent curling
edges. Replace by more suitable material e.g. rubber.
|
Slippery surfaces
|
Determine the cause and apply appropriate treatment. Replace
surfaces. Provide appropriate warning signs. When caused by moving from a wet
area to a dry floor surface, suitable footwear should, be provided where possible.
Suitable mats may be provided at point of change.
|
Inadequate lighting
|
Provide additional lighting and/or increase levels of
illumination. Provide increased natural lighting, e.g. glass panels or
windows.
|
Changes of level
|
Highlight changes, for example, by painting suitable markings
or conspicuous tread nosings. Provide better lighting and warning signs.
|
Sloping floors
|
Provide better lighting and warning signs. Floor markings and
handrails may be required.
