Safety Requirements for doing Hot work

  • Remove all combustible materials from the area (within 10m), if possible.
  • Use fire blanket to protect immovable combustible materials and also for welding slugs.
  • Cover the area with fire blanket for containment of sparks generated while doing hot work.
  • Provide proper fire extinguisher in sufficient numbers.

  • Appoint a fire-watch with a red jacket, if necessary.
  • Barricade the area and post proper signage.
  • Use of proper PPE and damage free
  • Conduct gas test if the presence of combustible gasses expected prior to work.

Types of Work permits

5 Types of work permit
  1. Hot Work Permit (red)
  2. Cold Work Permit (green)
  3. Radiography Permit (yellow)
  4. Vehicle/mobile plant entry work permit
  5. Confined Space Entry Permit

(a) Cold Work Permit: A document that specifies precautions identifies hazards and controls all work that is not hot and radiographic in nature.

(b) Hot Work Permit: A document that specifies precautions, identifies hazards and controls all work involving actual naked flames, sparks or has the potential for creating sparks or heat.

(c) Radiography Work Permit:
A document that specifies precautions identifies hazards and control all work involving radiographic in nature.

(d) Vehicle / Mobile Plant Entry Permit: A document that specifies precautions identifies hazards and controls all work involving entry of a vehicle or mobile plant into a hazardous area.

(e) Confined Space Entry Permit: A document that specifies precautions identifies hazards and controls all work involving entry to an enclosure, which has limited means of entry or exit, not designed for continuous occupancy.

Effectiveness and Reliability of Control Options

A set of integrated control measures that are effective and reliable enough to control exposure adequately has to be developed. It is important that the 'hierarchical' approach to reliability and effectiveness is not viewed so rigidly that some control options are seen as 'good', while others are seen as ineffective. 

Some control measures are more reliable than others.

There is a general hierarchy of controls available:

  • Elimination of the substance: This is the most effective though least realistic option. If elimination can be achieved it means that no exposure can take place and there is no residual risk to manage.
  • Reduction of exposure: By substituting a less harmful substance or reducing the number of people exposed and/or the frequency and duration of exposure. This method protects all workers but there will be residual risk to deal with.
  • Isolation of the substance: Secure storage facilities with limited access.
  • Controls: Engineering controls such as local exhaust ventilation. These have to be carefully monitored to ensure, for example, that the captor hood is correctly positioned.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: Or other devices worn by individuals such as exposure monitors. The main disadvantage of this method is that it only protects the user. Furthermore, it will only protect the user if the equipment/device is worn correctly, if at all.

Falls From Heights

The majority of fall from heights are accidents occur after falls from:
  • Ladders, primarily from moveable ladders; Scaffolding, primarily from general access scaffolds;
  • Work area / machinery / platform; Vehicles; Roof edge;
  • Stairs and gangways / catwalks.

FALL PROTECTION - OPEN SIDED FLOOR

OPEN SIDED FLOORS

Alls are the leading cause of deaths in the construction industry. Most fatalities occur when employees fall from open-sided floors and through floor openings. When working at heights, take the following precautions: 

  • Be alert to fall hazards; areas that require vigilance include open-sided floors, hoist areas, platforms, holes, walking/working surfaces, access to ladders and stairways, and faces of formwork. 
  • When exposed to open edges with vertical drops of six feet or more, ensure safety by placing guardrails around the hazard area, deploying safety nets, or by using a Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS). 
  • If using guardrail system, install top rails, mid-rails, and toe-boards. • Ensure that guardrails are capable of withstanding, without failure, a force of at least 200-pounds applied within two inches of the top edge, in any outward or downward direction. 
  • When working at heights, stay away from edges unless your job requires it and always be protected from falling.

Nozzles - Fire Safety

Nozzles - Fire Safety
  • The nozzle is a small metal fitting made of gun metal or brass or bronze having a tapered shape generally.
  • But it can be made to several shapes depending on the nature of purpose it is manufactured for. 
  • These have internal thread for attachment to the branch. 
  • As a precaution against damage the delivery orifice is counter sunk in the nozzle to a depth of 3 mm. 
  • The base of the nozzle is hexagonally shaped to permit the use of spanner. 
  • Standard nozzles to fit any branch with 63 mm or 70 mm hose are made of machined gun metal and vary in length from 4 to 4V2".The bores of the nozzle vary in diameter from 4.6 mm to 44 mm.
  • Larger bores are used in Deluge sets or Monitors etc. 
  • Besides there are nozzles used for Hose Reel Hose, Portable Extinguishers. 
  • Also there are nozzles made suitable for providing fine mist or combination of spray etc.

ASBESTOS AWARENESS

Asbestos a naturally occuring fibrous material. It is Majorly used in industries for fire proofing and as heat insulation material.

TYPES OF ASBESTOS
  • Crocidolite (Blue)
  • Amosite ( Brown)
  • Chrysotile ( White)
All types of Asbestos are  significantly dangerous, they are carcinogens, but blue and brown  Asbestos are more dangerous than white.


Exposure to Asbestos can cause numerous conditions and diseases:
  • PLEURAL PLAQUES
    • Benign calcification build up on the lining of internal organs, notably the lungs
  • ASBESTOSIS
    • Irreversible scarring of the lungs
  • LUNG CANCER
    • Increased incident, particularly if you smoke
  • MESOTHELIOMA
    • Cancer of the lining of the lungs or stomach
CONTROL MEASURES

The presence of Asbestos is not limited to any particular type of construction. It can be found in commercial premises such as shops; offices; any type of factories, especially chemical factories; and hospitals. It is also present in domestic premises.

Disturbance is any activity that involves physical and / or mechanical breaking of a material's surface. When an ACM is disturbed, airborne fibres can get released - these then become a health hazard.



Examples of disturbance include:
  • Removal of a drain pipe / repair to a damaged roof
  • Removal of lagging on a process line
  • Drilling into a 'portacabin' wall Building demolition
  • Re-packing of an old instrument / steam valve
  • Drilling into a panel on the back of a switch board
  • Accidental knocking of lagging with a scaffold pole
Where possible, vessels, buildings and structures that contain Asbestos should be labeled with a yellow triangle warning sign saying 'Danger Asbestos' and showing an exclamation mark.


Controlling Asbestos-related risks
Here are some recommendations:
  • Access to the area should be restricted to only those personnel required.
  • Signs or tapes must indicate the same.
  • Utmost care must be taken not to create dust.
  • ACMs must be kept wet whenever possible.
  • A suitable respirator of minimum P3 filter must be worn.
Things that should never be done when working with ACMs:
  • Never break up large pieces of ACM.
  • Never use high-speed power tools, as they can create large levels of dust.
  • Never expose other workers who are not protected.
  • Never remove protective clothing in non-designated areas.
  • Never walk any dust about.
  • Never clean items or PPE using a brush.
  • Never eat, drink or smoke in controlled areas.

BE ALERT AT ALL TIMES TO THE DANGERS OF WORKING WITH MATERIALS THAT MAY CONTAIN ASBESTOS.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER

USING A FIRE EXTINGUISHER



P - Pull the Pin at the top of the extinguisher. The pin releases a locking mechanism
and will allow you to discharge the extinguisher.


A - Aim at the base of the fire, not the flames. This is important - in order to put out
the fire, you must extinguish the fuel.


S - Squeeze the lever slowly. This will release the extinguishing agent in the
extinguisher. If the handle is released, the discharge will stop.


S - Sweep from side to side. Using a sweeping motion, move the fire extinguisher
back and forth until the fire is completely out. Operate the extinguisher from a safe
distance, several feet away, and then move towards the fire once it starts to
diminish. Be sure to read the instructions on your fire extinguisher - different fire
extinguishers recommend operating them from different distances.


Remember: Aim at the base of the fire, not at the flames !
