Causes of Fire

Electrical equipment - arcing, sparks, hot surfaces created by defective electrical equipment.

Spontaneous ignition - when some liquids are heated or sprayed onto a hot surface, they may ignite without an ignition source being present

Spontaneous combustion - when materials react with oxygen an exothermic reaction takes place, i.e. heat is emitted. May cause the material to ignite or burst into flames

Smoking - discarded smoking materials. Smoking in dangerous areas, e.g. flammable vapours present

Sparks - act as a source of ignition. Friction between surfaces where a machine contact a fixed part or two surfaces rubbing or sliding together during machine operation, e.g. grinders

Hot work - welding, soldering, hot cutting, brazing. Source of ignition, be careful where flammable vapours are present. Permit to work system is necessary when not in a workshop

Static electricity - electrostatic charging is produced by induction or friction, the charge can be carried away from the source, accumulated charge can be a source of ignition

Vehicles - maintenance and parking areas. Diesel and petrol engines, emissions, and hot surfaces, e.g. exhaust system can be a source of ignition

Open flames - many sources, e.g. boilers, furnaces, portable heating appliances, pilot lights. Poorly maintained or incorrectly used equipment can be a source of ignition

Lightning - source of ignition, protection by direct earthing

Arson - high-risk, e.g. 75% of school fires are caused by arson

Lack of management systems - no appropriate detection systems, means of raising the alarm. Poor housekeeping, no training etc.

Means of Fighting Fire

And also providing fire extinguishers for hot work, fire extinguishers should be located at determined fire points surrounding the site. The extinguishers should be appropriate to the size of the potential fire:
  • wood, paper and cloth – water extinguisher;
  • flammable liquids – dry powder or foam extinguisher;
  • electrical – carbon dioxide (CO2) extinguisher
Nominated people should be trained in the way to use extinguishers.

If the building being worked in is occupied (eg an office, hotel or hospital), make sure the work does not interfere with the escape route from the building, or any type of fire splitting up, alarms, dry risers, or sprinkler systems. Check this with the building occupier or the Fire Atelier.




Fire doors should never be locked, left wide open or removed. Keep existing wet and dry risers ready for use and install any new ones as soon as possible.

METHODS OF EXTINGUISHING FIRES

Method
Aim
Means
Remove Oxygen
Smother the fire.
Introduces a barrier between the fuel and the oxygen, e.g. a lid, mineral fibre blanket, foam, sand or carbon dioxide.
Remove Heat
Reduce the temperature of the fuel (and surroundings) to below the ignition temperature.
Uses water, etc. Some of the heat is transferred to the water and some is used up during the conversion of water to steam.
Remove Fuel
Shut off the supply of flammable gases or liquids.
Uses of valves, etc.


There are two main types of fire extinguishing systems: 
Fixed Installations, e.g. sprinkler, foam spray and gas flood systems; 
Portable Extinguishers, e.g. hand held or on a wheeled trolley.

S - Separation - Keep storage away from process areas, by distance or a physical barrier, For example, a Wall or Partition.

Control Measures for Storage in the Workplace:
  • In a suitable container, to prevent spills and sealed to prevent loss of vapour
  • In a suitable cabinet, bin or other store container
  • In a designated area of the workplace
  • Away from ignition sources, working oa process areas
  • Capable of containing any spillage
  • Provided with hazards warning signs to illustrate the flammability of the contents
  • Prohibition signs for smoking and naked flame
  • Not contain other substances or items
Storage in Open Air




Control Measures for Storage in the Open Air:
  • Formal storage area on a concrete pad, with a sump for spills
  • Bunded all around to take content of largest drum plus an allowance of 10%
  • Away from other buildings
  • Secure fence and gate 2m high
  • Marked by signs warning of flammability
  • Signs prohibiting smoking or other naked flames
  • Protection from sunlight
  • If lighting is provided within store it must be flame proof
  • Provision from spill containment materials
  • Fire Extinguishers located nearby - consider powder type
  • Full and Empty containers separated
  • Clear Identification of contents

Fire Risk Assessment
